More to life than power

Ted and I got on very well and developed a relationship beyond business: he invited my wife and me on his yacht; we bet on the outcomes of golf games against each other; and we had regular lunches and dinners, animated by entertaining conversations. Unfortunately, our last conversation was a sad occasion; at our last dinner, Ted knew he would not survive an aggressive brain tumour. We spent hours that day talking about philosophy, his legacy, the people he had met and loved, his big breaks and what he was most proud of. I still have goosebumps thinking about it – about the privilege of being invited to share such profound personal insights with a man who knew he was at the end of his days.

I remember that among the silver-framed black-and-white photos hung in his living room, it was not the ones with him and presidents and celebrities that took pride of place. His pride and joy were his sons. As well as a loving adoptive father, he was a major philanthropist, investing in hundreds of millions of dollars in charities, foundations and scholarships to help disadvantaged children get a decent education.

Power and authority don’t last forever. The tide rises and falls. If you have been an inspirational mentor or leader, someone who cares for their troops, you will leave a legacy. I have kept in close contact with many of my former colleagues who, for the most part, never turned their back on me when my career took a wrong turn. I still receive calls of affection, wishes of wellbeing and requests for advice, to which I am honoured and delighted to respond.

Bill Sinrich was a skilful negotiator. He taught me a lot, gave me a chance and I owe him. But I do sometimes wonder how someone so sharp did not seem to place that much value on building human relationships with clients.
